A healthy digestive system is the foundation for a strong immune system. When exposed to stressful conditions or fed a diet lacking quality forage, the horse’s digestive tract can become imbalanced to the point of diarrhea, weight loss, loss of appetite, and even death. With the declining availability of pasture, Chaffhaye offers a way to provide animals with a sufficient amount of fiber-rich forage that supports a healthy digestive system.
We manage all aspects of the Chaffhaye growing and packaging process. The process starts in our pastures. Chaffhaye’s alfalfa is carefully cut and harvested at peak leafiness or optimal plant maturity to maximize nutrients, palatability and digestibility. This insures that virtually all of the nutrient-rich leaves of the plant are captured. Once harvested, we chop the fresh forage into “chaff” of two to three inches in length, and lightly mist it with molasses to initiate nature’s fermentation process. The chaff is compressed into sturdy air-tight bags to lock in freshness, ensuring that dust, rain, mold, rodents and other undesirable elements are locked out. This occurs within hours of harvest.
Inside the Chaffhaye bag, nature’s fermentation process breaks down the forage and produces live yeast and beneficial bacteria that improve digestion. After the oxygen in the air-tight bag is used up, the fermentation ceases and the resulting Chaffhaye remains as fresh and nutritious as the day it was cut. In essence, the all-natural curing process transforms Chaffhaye from a supreme quality forage to one that is a super digestible forage. The process ensures that the animal can absorb more energy, vitamins and minerals from the plant than what is otherwise possible if the crop were dehydrated into dry hay or pellets.
Chaffhaye addresses many of the respiratory problems that can plague animals.
